How to Renew Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) for July 2026–June 2027
The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) provides vital, tax-free financial relief to low-income Canadian seniors. However, GIS eligibility is re-calculated every year. To ensure an uninterrupted stream of income for the upcoming benefit cycle running from July 2026 to June 2027, specific criteria must be met immediately.
Failing to verify your income information can result in your monthly payments abruptly stopping in July. Below is the authoritative guide to securing your benefits without disruption.
GIS Income Thresholds & Max Payments (2026–2027 Cycle)
Your benefit amounts for the July 2026 to June 2027 cycle are based strictly on your 2025 net world income. Asset values (like your home or personal savings) do not impact this calculation. The current maximum monthly payouts and strict annual income thresholds are structured as follows:
| Your Marital Status / Personal Situation | Maximum Annual Income Limit | Maximum Monthly GIS Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Single, Widowed, or Divorced Senior | Less than $22,512 | Up to $1,109.85 |
| Spouse/Partner receives full OAS pension | Less than $29,760 (Combined) | Up to $668.08 |
| Spouse/Partner receives the Allowance | Less than $41,664 (Combined) | Up to $668.08 |
| Spouse/Partner does not receive OAS or Allowance | Less than $53,952 (Combined) | Up to $1,109.85 |
Note: If you work while receiving GIS, the Earnings Exemption allows you to earn up to $5,000 completely free from clawbacks, and only 50% of the next $10,000 in employment income will count against your thresholds.
How to Renew Your GIS for July 2026 to June 2027
For the vast majority of Canadian seniors, the renewal process happens automatically behind the scenes—provided you remain compliant with tax filings.
- Automatic Renewal via CRA: Service Canada reviews your file every July by pulls your income data directly from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). If you filed your 2025 federal Income Tax and Benefit Return on time, you are automatically evaluated. You will receive a status letter from Service Canada in July 2026 outlining your new monthly amount or notifying you if you no longer qualify.
- Manual Statement of Income (Form ISP-3026): If you did not file your taxes on time, or if Service Canada contacts you stating they lack sufficient data, you must manually file Form ISP-3026 (Statement of Income for the Guaranteed Income Supplement) to declare your 2025 earnings directly.
Critical Warning: If your 2025 tax return was submitted late (after the April 30 deadline), your GIS renewal will experience processing delays. If your payments stop in July, they will only resume—with retroactive adjustments—once your income profile is completely processed by Service Canada.
Step-by-Step Action Plan: Avoiding a GIS Payment Gap
Step 1: Verify Your 2025 Tax Filing Status
Confirm that your 2025 income tax return was fully received and assessed by the CRA. If you missed the deadline, submit your return immediately using an authorized E-File platform or paper submission.
Step 2: Review and Update Marital Changes
Because GIS calculations rely on combined household metrics, you must report any life events (marriage, common-law union, separation, or the passing of a spouse) directly to Service Canada. Failure to report a separation can lock you out of a higher single-rate payout.
Step 3: Monitor Your My Service Canada Account (MSCA)
Log into your secure MSCA portal online. Navigate to the Old Age Security (OAS) dashboard and select “Profile” to ensure your mailing address and banking information for direct deposit are completely up to date. This ensures notifications reach you seamlessly.
Step 4: Request an Income Recalculation if Necessary
If you suffered a sudden, severe loss of income in 2026 (due to a retirement or a loss of a pension), do not wait for the next tax cycle. Contact Service Canada directly to request an estimated recalculation based on your current year’s lower earnings to increase your payout early.
Information Source & Reference Documentation: All threshold data, forms, and procedures are verified directly via the Government of Canada Official GIS Overview and related Employment and Social Development Canada Directives.

Note: If you have not yet filed your 2025 income tax, you will see your OAS cheque or direct deposit payment drop significantly because of missing GIS entitlement! Ensure to download the GIS renewal form, complete and send to Service Canada Pension Office ASAP!

July 30, 2022 3:12 pmHi,
You must call pension call centre to find out if they have received your tax information for 2021. Only when the information is received, the pension processing agent can calculated your upcoming GIS entitlement. Right now, you will only get paid for your OAS portion until GIS is calculated.
