As of July 2020, Service Canada has  increased the:

  1. full earnings exemption for GIS renewal from $3,500 to $5,000 and;
  2. partial exemption of 50% for earning between $5,001 to $10,000

The maximum earnings that can be deducted is $10,000. These earnings apply to both employment and self-employment income.

This means that any earnings you made under $5,000 will not affect your GIS monthly benefits calculation.

Please do keep in mind that GIS is an income-tested program, any income you made from the previous tax year will affect the upcoming GIS benefit year.
